Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) is the government institution responsible for the conservation and sustainable management of Namibia’s natural resources. It oversees environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, forestry management, and the development of the tourism sector.

MEFT plays a leading role in protecting Namibia’s unique ecosystems and wildlife. It manages the country’s network of national parks and protected areas, enforces environmental legislation, and works to combat threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and climate change.

The Ministry is responsible for forestry development and the sustainable use of forest resources. It promotes community-based natural resource management programmes, which empower local communities to benefit from and conserve wildlife and forests in their areas.

In the tourism sector, MEFT supports the growth of sustainable and responsible tourism. It works to position Namibia as a premier eco-tourism destination while ensuring that tourism development contributes to conservation and benefits local communities.

The Ministry formulates and implements policies on environmental management, climate change adaptation and mitigation, waste management, and pollution control. It also coordinates Namibia’s participation in international environmental agreements and conventions.

Through its combined focus on conservation, sustainable resource use, and tourism development, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism contributes significantly to Namibia’s green economy, job creation, and long-term environmental sustainability.
