Ministry of Works and Transport

The Ministry of Works and Transport (MWT) is the government institution responsible for the development, regulation, and maintenance of Namibia’s transport infrastructure and state assets. It oversees roads, rail, maritime affairs, civil aviation, and government buildings and properties.

The Ministry formulates and implements policies for the transport sector to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable movement of people and goods. It works to improve connectivity across the country and support Namibia’s role as a regional logistics hub.

MWT is responsible for the planning, construction, and maintenance of the national road network, as well as oversight of rail transport. It also manages maritime affairs, including ports (in coordination with Namport) and shipping regulations.

The Ministry oversees civil aviation policy and works with the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to ensure the safety and development of air transport. It also manages government infrastructure, including the construction and maintenance of public buildings and state assets.

Through its various directorates, MWT plays a key role in facilitating trade and economic development by improving transport infrastructure. It also supports regional integration through participation in corridors such as the Walvis Bay–Ndola–Lubumbashi Development Corridor and the Trans-Kalahari Corridor.

The Ministry of Works and Transport is central to Namibia’s infrastructure development agenda. By maintaining and expanding transport networks and state assets, it contributes directly to economic growth, job creation, and improved quality of life for citizens.
