Bank of Namibia

Established by the Bank of Namibia Act, 2020 (Act No. 1 of 2020)

The Bank of Namibia (BoN) is the central bank of the Republic of Namibia. It was established shortly after independence in 1990 and is constitutionally mandated under Article 128 of the Namibian Constitution. As the country’s monetary authority, the Bank plays a critical role in maintaining macroeconomic stability and supporting the broader economic development objectives of Namibia.

The Bank’s primary mandate is to safeguard price stability (low and stable inflation) and financial system stability. It formulates and implements monetary policy, manages the country’s foreign reserves, issues the national currency (the Namibian Dollar), and acts as banker and advisor to the Government. The Namibian Dollar is pegged to the South African Rand, which anchors inflation expectations and facilitates trade within the Common Monetary Area.

In addition to monetary policy, the Bank of Namibia is responsible for the regulation and supervision of banking institutions and other financial entities. It promotes a sound, stable, and inclusive financial system through prudential regulation, macroprudential oversight, and the development of efficient payment and settlement systems. The Bank also manages the Deposit Guarantee Scheme to protect depositors.

The Bank conducts extensive economic research and analysis, producing regular reports on inflation, economic growth, balance of payments, and financial stability. This research informs policy decisions and provides valuable insights to government, businesses, and the public. The Bank also plays an active role in financial literacy initiatives and stakeholder engagement.

As a key institution in Namibia’s economic architecture, the Bank of Namibia works to foster sustainable economic development while maintaining the credibility and independence expected of a modern central bank. It balances its core stability mandate with supporting broader national goals such as financial inclusion, economic diversification, and resilience to external shocks.

The Bank operates under the Bank of Namibia Act, 2020, which expanded its mandate to include explicit macroprudential responsibilities. It continues to modernise its operations, strengthen its institutional capacity, and align with international best practices in central banking while remaining responsive to the unique needs of the Namibian economy.
