Urban Friction is a Namibian climbing business based in Windhoek that grew from an outdoor climbing operation into a dedicated climbing centre. The company was established out of a passion for developing and sharing Namibia’s climbing culture, and today offers both indoor and outdoor climbing experiences.

Its indoor facility at Maerua Mall provides climbing and bouldering opportunities for people of different ages and experience levels. The gym also offers coached sessions and training, making it suitable for beginners as well as more experienced climbers looking to improve their skills.

Urban Friction extends beyond the climbing gym through outdoor climbing activities and guided experiences. The team has worked to identify and establish climbing areas around Namibia, helping both local climbers and visitors discover the country’s natural rock-climbing opportunities.

The business also caters to groups and families, offering activities such as children’s programmes, birthday parties, holiday camps and corporate team-building events. These activities use climbing as a way of combining physical activity, adventure and teamwork.

Urban Friction has become an important part of Namibia’s growing sport-climbing community. Under the leadership of David Bishop, who took ownership of the business in 2024, the company has focused on expanding its facilities and encouraging greater participation in sport climbing across the country.

The business aims to make climbing accessible while also developing Namibia as a destination for climbing and outdoor adventure.
