Roads Authority of Namibia
The Roads Authority of Namibia is a state-owned enterprise established under the Roads Authority Act (Act 17 of 1999). It serves as the custodian of Namibia’s national road network on behalf of the Government, with responsibility for planning, constructing, maintaining, and managing the country’s proclaimed public roads.
The Authority manages a vast network of roads that connect major towns, borders, and economic centres across Namibia. Its work is critical to supporting trade, tourism, agriculture, mining, and general mobility, making it a key enabler of national socio-economic development.
In addition to road construction and maintenance, the Roads Authority is responsible for managing road reserves, issuing certain permits, and overseeing aspects of vehicle licensing and registration through the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS). It works to ensure that roads meet appropriate safety and engineering standards.
The Authority plays a central role in road safety by improving road design, signage, and infrastructure. Namibia’s road network has been ranked among the best in Africa by the World Economic Forum in previous years, reflecting the Authority’s ongoing efforts to maintain high standards despite challenging terrain and climatic conditions.
