Ministry of International Relations and Trade

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO), now known as the Ministry of International Relations and Trade (MIRT), is the government institution responsible for formulating, promoting, and executing Namibia’s foreign policy and international relations. It serves as the primary interface between Namibia and the international community.

The Ministry manages Namibia’s diplomatic relations, including the establishment and maintenance of embassies, high commissions, and consulates abroad. It coordinates Namibia’s participation in multilateral organisations such as the United Nations, African Union, SADC, and SACU, while advancing the country’s interests in international forums.

In addition to traditional diplomacy, the Ministry now incorporates trade diplomacy following the integration of the trade portfolio. It works to promote Namibia’s economic interests globally, support trade agreements, attract investment, and facilitate international economic cooperation.

The Ministry provides consular services to Namibian citizens abroad, including passport and visa assistance, legal support in foreign jurisdictions, and emergency assistance. It also handles the accreditation of foreign diplomats and missions in Namibia.

Through bilateral and multilateral engagement, the Ministry promotes peace, security, and development cooperation. It plays a key role in advancing Namibia’s foreign policy objectives, including regional integration, South-South cooperation, and the promotion of a rules-based international order.

As the custodian of Namibia’s foreign relations, the Ministry of International Relations and Trade continues to strengthen the country’s global partnerships while supporting national development goals through strategic diplomacy and international cooperation.
