University of Namibia

The University of Namibia (UNAM) is the country’s largest and premier public research university. Established by an Act of Parliament on 31 August 1992, it serves as Namibia’s flagship institution for higher education, research, and national development. With a strong emphasis on academic excellence and accessibility, UNAM plays a central role in building human capital and driving socio-economic progress across the nation.

UNAM offers a wide spectrum of undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programmes through four main faculties and 17 specialised schools. These cover Agriculture, Engineering & Natural Sciences; Commerce, Management & Law; Education & Human Sciences; and Health Sciences & Veterinary Medicine. Students can pursue degrees in medicine, engineering, law, business, education, nursing, veterinary science, and many other fields, supported by modern facilities and practical training opportunities.

Research and innovation form a core pillar of UNAM’s mandate. The university currently runs over 265 active research projects addressing local, regional, and global challenges in areas such as health, agriculture, environment, technology, and social development. It consistently ranks as Namibia’s top research institution and maintains strong partnerships with international universities, industry, and government bodies to translate knowledge into real-world impact.

UNAM operates across 12 campuses and additional regional centres nationwide, making quality higher education accessible beyond Windhoek. This multi-campus model supports community-based learning, extension services, and outreach programmes that directly benefit rural and underserved communities while fostering national unity and regional development.

Student life at UNAM emphasises holistic development. Alongside rigorous academics, the university provides vibrant campus experiences through sports, cultural activities, student organisations, leadership programmes, and wellness support. With over 30,000 students (including international learners) and a growing alumni network of more than 70,000 graduates, UNAM creates a dynamic, inclusive environment that prepares graduates for meaningful careers and civic responsibility.
